What makes your community unique? We asked and here is how the Hamlet of Clearwater responded:

Clearwater is a small community with a lot of community spirit. We have always rallied together to support each other. We volunteer at our Annual Canada day baseball tournament (62nd this year) and the Harvest Moon Festival. It’s a multi generational community; you might go into the restaurant and find all ages sitting together at one table visiting. The village it self is rich in history.

Our relationship with the Harvest Moon Society has forged many new friendships and projects. Our walking trail is a great way to spend an afternoon. We have a curling Rink with artificial ice (heated by geo thermal) and a natural ice skating rink. We have a store with fresh homemade baking every Thursday, a restaurant owned and managed by the community and an Anglican and a United Church, Community Hall, and a Baseball park with 11 diamonds and a playground.

Although we are small on numbers in our Community we are strong in spirit!

The small Hamlet of Clearwater, is located in the Pembina Valley of southwest Manitoba a mere 260 km's from the urban centre of Winnipeg.

Imagine coming to visit a little town on the edge of a valley where white-tailed deer roam the streets at dusk, bald-headed eagles soar over the valley, and wild turkeys pick for food along the road.

Clearwater was established in 1876. It was considered to be in the Northwest Territories, as the official boundary of Manitoba was the 99th meridian (which was one mile east of the town). In 1877, the boundary was extended to its present location.

Clearwater is home of the ever popular summer festival, the Harvest Moon Festival and the Harvest Moon Society.

The area that encompasses the East Side of Lake Winnipeg is located North East of Winnipeg starting around the community of Sagkeeng First Nation .

These regions of Manitoba, with 25 million hectares of boreal forest lands and waters, remains mostly in its natural state with the forest ecosystem intact. Most of these natural regions do not have permanent highways or transmission corridors, hydro dams, forestry operations, or other mills or plants (Manitoba Wildlands).

In 2011, the Province of Manitoba started building an all-weather road along the east side starting near Hollow Water First Nation to Berens River First Nation.

The majority of the area is part of the proposed UNESCO World Heritage Site - Pimachiowin Aki

Ochre River, Manitoba

Ochre River is a small quaint village that sits just a minutes drive off of the #5 highway on your way up to Dauphin. What drew me there the first time, was a cafe in a church called, The Heavenly Scoop. The town is waiting for you to explore all of its subtleness and intrigue. The R.M. of Ochre River is situated between Riding Mountain National Park and Lake Dauphin. The Villages of Ochre River and Makinak are situated within the municipality.

Ste. Rose du Lac, Manitoba

Ste.Rose du Lac is a progressive community of approximately one thousand people. The town is situated in Manitoba's beautiful Parkland Region. Ste. Rose du Lac is just over 300 kilometres from Winnipeg. The area has a rich French Canadian heritage. Many residents of Ste.Rose du Lac are fluent in both official languages (Manitoba Community Profiles).

In the spring of 1889, a few Métis from St Vital, seeing a need to go further a field to find the necessary haylands to be able to overwinter their animals, decided to go on an exploratory trip to the west of Lake Manitoba and possibly to Lake Dauphin some 190 miles North West of Winnipeg (Town of Ste.Rose du Lac).

The travellers from St. Vital finding the area suitable to their demands went back to St. Vital, only to return on the 19th of August 1889 to establish themselves as the first residents of what was to be known as Ste. Rose du Lac (Town of Ste.Rose du Lac).

Town of Laurier, Manitoba

In the shadow of the mountain, the Town of Laurier sits just outside the North East corner boundary of Riding Mountain National Park.

You can easily spend a couple hours exploring another culture, another way of life by visiting the Town of Laurier. Last summer, we came upon Laurier on our way back from a long and arduous search for Skanes Crossing. What turned into a short roadtrip searching on word of mouth, we found what we were looking for by passing through Laurier.

Stop in on your way to or from Dauphin and walk around.
